Good Driving Habits

Paying attention to Good driving habits and increasing gas mileage contribute to:

Increased energy conservation.
Reduced our enviromental impact.
Reduce our dependence on foreign energy
   sources.

People in the United States over the past few generations have been accustomed to driving their cars whenever and wherever with no real concerns about gas mileage and good driving habits, or how many energy dollars it is costing us.

In the past few years however weather we have good driving habits or not we all have had a rude awakening with gas prices rising over $4.00 a gallon and spending in many cases almost as much to commute to work and do our errands every month as it cost us to pay our mortgage/rent.

As gas prices have stablized in the last few months, concerns with improving good driving habits increasing our gas mileage has relaxed our thinking with to many people thinking that the worst must be over and now we can afford to drive not thinking about good driving habits.

Now is the time for all people in the US to recognize that the oil markets, oil producing nations and oil companies around the world will not permit the price of oil to stay low very long. As summer 2010 starts we have seen the price of gas rise slowly over just the months between May and June.
The so-called economic experts keep telling us that oil prices will not go up to what they were in the summer of 2008.

Because of the vulnerability of our offshore oil wells and gas refineries located along the coastal areas , we are only one major natural or manmade disaster away from extremely high gas and fuel prices.

The recent oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico is a prime example of why we need to practice good driving habits.

With the possable moritorium on oil drilling in the Gulf , gas prices could very well go higher than we saw during the summer of 2008.

It is a statistical fact that 80% of Americans waste 25% of gas purchased when they don’t practice good driving habit and pay attention to ways of increasing their gas mileage.

Being aware of what we are doing and what is going on around us when we are driving will greatly improve our gas mileage and will keep the price of oil from going through the roof again.

Read through the list below of the most important good driving habits to follow and you will help with conserving energy in our cars, the environment and save unbelievable amounts of your hard earned cash.

1.
The most important good driving habits  are to be aware of the difference between aggressive driving vs. moderate driving.

2. Follow the speed limit! If good driving habits are not applied by reducing your speed
For every 10mph faster we go above 60mph, gas mileage will decrease by10% to 15%.

Note: 80% of the energy that is needed to move a car is to overcome wind resistance.

A good driving habit to Remember:

For every 10mph faster you go at speeds over 60 MPH only saves you a minimum of six minutes on a 60 mile trip.

3. Anticipating traffic and stops is another good driving habit. Being aware of traffic conditions ahead of and anticipating your stops will help increase gas mileage. If traffic is building up ahead of you or the light turning amber take your foot off the gas. You are going to have to stop anyway.

4. Be aware of following to close to the car in front of you (tailgating) is a very important good driving habit. If you drive to close to cars in front of you, this only causes you to hit the brakes and every time you do you will reduce gas mileage.

5. Accelerate up to speed slowly and don’t worry about that jerk behind you.

6. Plan your trips and take extra time to get where you need to go.

Note: Planning and extra time allows you to reduce the tension of a trip

7. Cruise control will increase your mileage 10% on longer trips. If you have cruised USE IT!!

8.
Traffic congestion and road rage reduce our ability and change our attitudes to practice good  driving habits and increase gas mileage. Try to avoid it!!

9. Unecessary idling:  In the US we sit in traffic and idle for hours on end, a good driving habit is to become aware when you are idling for any reason! To many times we are not even aware that we are idling.  If you know that you will be stopped more than a minute shut down the engine .It takes less gas to start an engine than letting it idle for 30 seconds.

Because we have become so dependent on using our cars for every thing, you can save a serious amount of gas and increase gas mileage by skipping the drive-thru window and parking your car instead. Every minute that you sit in a drive-thru line with your engine running is wasting gas and increasing the amount harmful emissions into the environment while you waste expensive gas.

10. DO NOT USE YOUR CELL PHONE!! when driving you car! This is a new good driving habit we need to practice.

Note: When you use your cell phone and drive your attention to the road and your driving is reduced by 70%.

Many states have adopted new cellphone texting laws that make it illegal to text while driving. These laws also include entering phone numbers as texting.

GoHERE for all state cellphone texting and cell phone laws.

Many people are starting to practice good driving habits! If you know someone that does! Tell them about it.

  We must increase our awareness!
               Good driving habits

            WILL SAVE ENERGY!!!
